Tokyo Banana has a new matcha green tea cake

Aug 02, 2023Aug 02, 2023

The tea-infused cake is a collaboration with long-standing Kyoto teahouse Itoh Kyuemon

Tokyo Banana is one of Japan’s most popular souvenir snacks. It often comes out with special editions of its cakes and cookies featuring different flavours and even popular characters like Pokémon and Doraemon. If you’re tempted by the brand new Tokyo Banana milkshake, you should also keep an eye out for the new Tokyo Banana matcha cake.

This special dessert is made in collaboration with renowned Kyoto tea specialist Itoh Kyuemon. Founded in 1832, the tea purveyor is revered for its Uji matcha tea and desserts, which you can enjoy at one of its cafés in Kyoto. The new Tokyo Banana collab is simply called 'The Matcha Cake' as it features a soft matcha-flavoured sponge filled with two layers of milk cream, one of which is enhanced with matcha.

While there's no banana flavouring in this particular cake, you'll still see cute touches from the brand incorporated into the packaging. There’s an illustration of a person in a kimono with a banana clip in her hair.

The cakes are sold in boxes of eight (¥1,404) or 12 (¥2,106). As most souvenir snacks, you’ll be able to find this one at Tokyo’s two main airports. The Matcha Cake is now available at the Fa-So-La shops at Narita Airport and Tokyo Souvenir Shop North at Haneda Airport.
